Ford's Bringing Back the Ranchero, Here's What We Know So Far

A new Ranchero is on the horizon. Can Ford bring back another nameplate from the past?

There is no shortage of trucks and SUVs in Ford’s portfolio and we have seen some great products, like America’s favorite Ford F-150 and its younger sibling, Ford Maverick. Ford is also known to hit the customers’ nostalgia by bringing back the legendary nameplates from the past, as they did with Ford Bronco, and is now working to bring back another player from the history books.

Ford is planning to relaunch the Ford Ranchero in 2022, to replace the Ford Courier pickup, and it has hit the right chords with enthusiasts and potential buyers. It is planned to be a compact pickup truck, based on the new Ford platform and pack all the goodies that other Ford trucks have. Let’s have a sneak peek into some of the expected details and specs of the upcoming 2022 Ford Ranchero.

Platform and Styling

It is anticipated that the new Ranchero will be based on Ford’s new CD6 platform. The same platform on which the Ford maverick is based and it is known to be very dynamic and lightweight.

In terms of styling, the new Ranchero would get much of its inspiration from the Ford Escape SUV, if the renderings are to be trusted. The front of the car is aggressive with sleek headlamps and a bulky fascia, particularly due to the grille and bumpers. It’s a pickup truck, so a rear bed can be expected with the car either being a 2-door or crew cab.

Ecoboost 2.3L engine

Technical Specifications

The new Ford Ranchero would be equipped with a few engines from Ford’s versatile lineup of powertrains. The base model would likely pack a smaller 1.5L 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine, the mid variant with a few upgraded esthetics will have a 2.0L, and the most outrageous, Raptor-esque trim would likely have a 2.3L engine.

A hybrid Ecoboost powertrain option is also expected to be offered, along with a diesel trim as well. The transmission would either be Ford’s 8-speed or 10-speed automatic, an electronic power steering, and 4-wheel independent suspension with a limited rear slip differential would be available.

In terms of performance and capability, it is going to give a tough time to its competitors, just as it did to Chevy El Camino in 1957.

Ford ranchero Interior

Cabin and Amenities

The new Ford Ranchero will have a rugged and generously equipped interior. Most likely based on the Ford Explorer, it will pack the Ford’s new Sync 4, electronic tow and stability assist, latest infotainment, different drive modes, traction control, and climate control are going to be standard.

While some of the premium trims would pack upscale leather upholstery, heated seats, a dynamic rearview camera, and a suite of advanced driver assistance technology. If the renderings are reliable, the interior of the Ranchero would be as stylish and engaging as its exterior.

Final Verdict

Ford has had success resurrecting old nameplates from the past. If the new Ranchero is as robust as the other Ford trucks, packs good technology, and is reliable, it could be a huge success.

Like the 50s, it would give the rivals a run for their money, especially if it is priced sensibly. Starting just below $20,000 would make it an instant hit, and a popular option in the truck tug of war.

Money may not buy happiness, but I'd rather cry in a Jaguar than on a bus.
